Week 18/2018: What’s on my design wall?

I finished piecing and there is no denying that the top is now lopsided. If this was a traditional sampler quilt this would be quite an issue. The beauty of improv, however, is that this is absolutely fine. Just add something to the sides to square it up and you’re good. So, what to add to the sides? I am now leaning towards ordering some Cherrywood yardage in a dark blue like indigo, but also still wondering whether a lighter colour would work better.

Curious what this project looked like in week 17 and week 16?

Don’t you have any fabric left to continue the ‘pattern’? Otherwise I think I’d go with orange.

No, all the blues that I had from this fabric are already in the quilt, I only have some brown left and with too much brown it quickly becomes blah I think. Orange has crossed my mind as well, I am just worried that it becomes too much like a Kingsday quilt if I use it.

How about a long wedge made of all the colours you’ve used? It would mean you don’t have to buy any more fabric – assuming you have enough, of course.

No, all the blues already made it into the quilt and I only had very small pieces (approximately 6’x9′) to start with.

I think you should add a solid border for the piecing to float in but do not square the piecing, only square the final piece with the solid borders. Think what visual interest (and very improvisational) it would have not being square inside the border. Just an idea, I am sure it will be fabulous whatever you decide 🙂

That is exactly what I was thinking! By squaring the piecing I would lose quite a bit which I definitely don’t want

Yes, no squaring, and maybe both colors of blue, dark on top and right side, light blue on bottom and left side? I chose those sides because of where the dark blues are in the piece. I’m very interested in seeing where it will go! How long does it take Cherrywood to get to you?

I used photoshop to visualise how different colours would look and decided on a dark blue. The binding will probably be orange. I have no idea how quick the fabric gets here. 2 weeks or so?
